Financial Goals: How to Break Big Dreams Into Baby Steps

Welcome back, readers! I hope you're having a fantastic day, yay!

This post is all about BABY STEPS. My plan of action is to take my BIG, HUGE, DREAMY GOALS and break them down into smaller, actionable, bite-sized steps. Doing it this way makes everything feel less overwhelming and so much more tangible — because progress, even tiny progress, is still progress!

If you haven't read my financial and entrepreneurship goals post yet, go check that out first so this one makes more sense. Then come back here and let's get into it!

💸 Breaking Down My Financial Goals

Here's how I've chunked each big goal into daily, weekly, and monthly targets. Seeing the numbers this way makes them feel so much more doable.

SIMPLE IRA — $16,000

  • Daily: ~$44.44

  • Weekly: ~$333.33

  • Monthly: ~$1,333.33

Emergency Fund — $15,000

  • Daily: ~$41.66

  • Weekly: ~$312.50

  • Monthly: ~$1,250.00

Tiny House Savings — $40,000

  • Daily: ~$111.11

  • Weekly: ~$833.33

  • Monthly: ~$3,333.33

Want to do this math for your own goals? I love using a financial goal tracker or savings planner to map it all out visually — there's something about writing it down that makes it feel real.

🚗 Car Loan — ~$13,000

Before aggressively attacking this one, I've decided to first sign up for a driver safety course to see if it lowers my car insurance a bit. Small smart moves first! Once that's done, I'll fold the car loan into my debt payoff plan.

If you're working on paying down debt too, Debt-Free by 30 by Jason Anthony is a great motivating read, and a debt payoff tracker journal can help you celebrate every milestone along the way.

👶 Baby Fund — Amount TBD

I've decided to research this one a little more before officially breaking it into baby steps — I'm honestly not sure yet how much a baby fund should have! If you've been through this, I'd love to hear from you. In the meantime, I'm just setting aside a small amount each month as a placeholder while I figure it out.

🎯 My Primary Focus Right Now

For now, my SIMPLE IRA, Emergency Fund, and Tiny House Savings are the three monetary goals I'm focusing on most. These feel the most urgent and exciting to me, so that's where my energy is going.

📚 Financial Literacy — One Podcast a Day

To keep growing my money knowledge, I've committed to listening to a finance podcast every morning on my walk. It's such an easy habit to layer onto something I'm already doing! A few I love and recommend:

  • The Dave Ramsey Show — practical, tough-love money advice

  • So Money with Farnoosh Torabi — inspiring conversations about building wealth

  • Afford Anything with Paula Pant — great for mindset shifts around money and freedom

If you prefer books over podcasts, The Psychology of Money by Morgan Housel is one of the best financial reads out there right now — short chapters, big insights.

💗 Financial Healing — Working on My Money Mindset

For my financial healing journey, I've signed up for an online course at laurenoflove.com/foundations. I'm honestly not sure where this path will lead, but I'm super excited to find out!

If you're also working on your relationship with money on a deeper level, here are a couple of books I highly recommend alongside any course work:

✨ Happy Money — Starting a Gratitude Practice

To practice the art of Happy Money, I've started a daily gratitude journaling practice — specifically writing about how grateful I am for the money that flows through my life, big and small. Shifting from scarcity to abundance starts with noticing what's already there.

A beautiful gratitude journal can make this practice feel special and something to look forward to each day.

Wishing you a beautiful rest of your day — let's manifest this together!
